How the TikTok For You feed works, and how to reset it
Why TikTok's For You feed is so compelling, how it can pull kids toward harmful content, and how to steer or reset it.
- The For You feed learns from what your child watches, rewatches, likes and skips.
- It can quickly narrow into one theme, including harmful ones like extreme dieting or sadness.
- Use "Not interested", keyword filters, Manage topics and Refresh your feed to steer it.
The For You feed is the heart of TikTok: an endless stream of videos chosen for each user. It's remarkably good at finding what holds attention, which is why it's so hard to stop scrolling.
How it learns
TikTok's algorithm watches signals like:
- How long your child watches each video, and whether they rewatch it
- Likes, comments, shares and follows
- Videos they skip quickly
- Searches and hashtags
- Accounts they interact with
Watching one kind of video longer than others is enough to get more of it, even without liking anything.
Rabbit holes
Because the feed responds so quickly, it can narrow into a single theme. For most children, that's harmless: cats, basketball, cooking, a K-pop group. But it can also narrow into:
- Extreme diet, "what I eat in a day" and body-checking videos
- Sad, hopeless or self-harm related content
- Angry or hateful commentary
- Sexualised content
- Gambling and "easy money" content
Children often don't notice the shift. It happens gradually, one video at a time.
How to steer the feed
Not interested
Press and hold on a video, then tap Not interested. TikTok shows fewer similar videos.
Keyword filters
In Settings and privacy, Content preferences, add words or hashtags to filter out of the For You and Following feeds. Parents can also set these through Family Pairing.
Manage topics
In Content preferences, adjust how much of certain topics appear in the feed.
Refresh your For You feed
TikTok has a Refresh option in Content preferences that resets recommendations, as if starting fresh. It's useful if the feed has gone somewhere unhealthy.
Restricted Mode
Filters content that may not be suitable for younger viewers.
Talk about the algorithm
Teens are often interested to learn how the feed works. Explain:
- "TikTok shows you more of what you watch, not what's good for you."
- "If your feed is making you feel bad, that's not you, that's the algorithm. You can change it."
Ask to scroll their feed with them occasionally. Notice the themes. If you see something worrying, talk about it calmly. See social media and self-esteem.
Use the Following feed
The Following feed shows only accounts your child chose to follow. Encouraging more time there, and less in For You, gives them more control.
eGuard sets up screen time, bedtime and app rules on your child's phone and checks that each one is really on. Free for one child.
