Roblox safety for parents: the complete guide

What Roblox is, why kids love it, the real risks from chat to spending, and how to use Roblox's parental controls to keep your child safer.

The short version
  • Roblox is a platform of millions of user-made games ("experiences"), with chat and its own currency, Robux.
  • Link a parent account to manage chat, content maturity, spending and screen time.
  • The main risks are contact from strangers, inappropriate user-made content, scams and overspending.

Roblox is hugely popular with Filipino children, especially between about 7 and 14. It isn't one game: it's a platform where users create and play millions of games, which Roblox calls experiences. Kids can play, chat, build and spend money there.

Why kids love it

  • Endless variety: obstacle courses (obbies), role-play, simulators, horror games, tycoons
  • Playing with friends, and making new ones
  • Creating their own games and items
  • Customising their avatar

The risks

Contact from strangers

Roblox includes chat, and some offenders use games like Roblox to find and groom children, often trying to move them to Discord, Snapchat or other apps. See Roblox chat and strangers.

Inappropriate content

Because experiences are made by users, some include violence, horror, or sexual content that breaks Roblox's rules before moderators remove it. See inappropriate experiences on Roblox.

Scams and spending

"Free Robux" scams, trading scams and account theft are common, and Robux can add up quickly. See Robux spending and scams.

Time

With endless experiences, it's easy to lose track of time.

Roblox's safety features

Roblox has added many safety features in recent years, including:

  • Parental Controls with a linked parent account, to manage your child's settings remotely
  • Content maturity labels on experiences (Minimal, Mild, Moderate, Restricted)
  • Chat restrictions for under-13s, and age checks that determine who can chat with whom
  • Spending limits and screen time limits
  • Filtering of chat messages to block personal information and inappropriate language

Settings change often. See how to set up Roblox parental controls for current steps.

Setup checklist

  1. Use your child's real birthday when creating their account.
  2. Link your parent account through Parental Controls.
  3. Set content maturity to fit your child's age.
  4. Set chat to friends only, or off for young children.
  5. Set a monthly spending limit.
  6. Set a daily screen time limit.
  7. Turn on 2-step verification. See passwords and 2FA.

Talk about

  • "Who do you play with? Do you know them in real life?"
  • "If someone asks you to talk on another app, or offers Robux, tell me."
  • "There's no such thing as free Robux."
  • "If you see something weird or scary in a game, leave and tell me."

Play with them

Ask your child to show you their favourite experiences, or make your own account and play together. You'll learn quickly how chat, friends and Robux work, and your child will be more likely to talk to you about it.
