How to set up Roblox parental controls
Step-by-step: link a parent account to your child's Roblox account, then set content maturity, chat, spending limits and screen time.
- Create your own Roblox account and link it to your child's through Parental Controls.
- From your account, you can manage content maturity, chat, spending and screen time.
- Use your child's real birthday; many protections depend on age.
Roblox lets parents manage a child's settings remotely by linking a parent account. Roblox updates its controls regularly, so menu names may differ slightly; the main settings stay similar.
Step 1: Check your child's account
Log into your child's account and check:
- Birthday: it should be their real birthday. Roblox applies protections based on age.
- Email: add your email, so you can recover the account and get notifications.
- 2-step verification: turn it on in Settings, Security.
Step 2: Link your parent account
- In your child's account, go to Settings, Parental Controls.
- Choose to add a parent, and enter your email.
- Follow the link in the email. You'll be asked to create your own Roblox account or sign in, and to verify you're an adult, for example with ID or a payment card.
- Once linked, you can manage your child's settings from your own account, on any device.
Step 3: Content maturity
Roblox labels experiences by content maturity:
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Minimal | Occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood, mild fear |
| Mild | Repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humour, mild fear |
| Moderate | Moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humour, moderate fear |
| Restricted | Strong violence, heavy realistic blood, and other mature themes; only for ID-verified users 17 and over |
Choose the maximum level your child can access. For younger children, Minimal or Mild.
Step 4: Chat and communication
- Under-13s have more restricted chat by default, including limits on private messaging.
- You can set chat to friends only or off.
- Roblox uses age checks (a selfie-based age estimate or ID) to unlock some chat features and to limit chat between different age groups.
- Consider turning off voice chat and party features for younger children.

Step 5: Spending
Set a monthly spending limit, and turn on spending notifications. Don't save a card on the account or device. See Robux spending and scams.
Step 6: Screen time
Set a daily screen time limit for Roblox. You'll also see how much time your child has spent.
Step 7: Friends
From your parent account you can see your child's friends list. Review it together occasionally: "Who's this? How do you know them?"
Step 8: Device controls too
Roblox controls only cover Roblox. Use Family Link or Screen Time for the rest of the device.
Keep checking
Roblox changes its features and settings frequently. Every few months, log in and review your child's settings and friends list.
