YouTube recommendations and Shorts: what parents should know

How YouTube's recommendations and Shorts keep kids watching, what content slips through, and how to guide what your child watches.

The short version
  • YouTube recommends videos based on what keeps viewers watching, not what's good for them.
  • Shorts are especially hard to stop; set time limits and turn off autoplay where you can.
  • Clear watch history and use "Not interested" to steer recommendations.

YouTube is where many Filipino children spend more time than on any other app, on phones, tablets and TVs. Most of what they watch is harmless. But the way YouTube recommends videos can lead children to content you wouldn't choose, and keep them watching longer than intended.

Setup steps for kids' and teen accounts are in YouTube parental controls. This guide is about what happens once they're watching.

How recommendations work

YouTube suggests videos based on what your child (and similar viewers) have watched, liked and searched, and what keeps people watching. It's very good at finding more of what holds attention. That's why one gaming video becomes twenty, and one diet video can become a feed full of them.

Shorts

Shorts are short vertical videos, similar to TikTok. They're designed to be swiped endlessly. Children often find them harder to stop than longer videos, because there's never a natural ending.

What slips through

  • Inappropriate content disguised as children's content: familiar characters in violent or disturbing situations
  • Prank and challenge videos that encourage copying. See dangerous viral challenges.
  • Diet, fitness and appearance content that can affect self-image
  • Extreme views in commentary videos
  • Gambling-style content: case openings, "sugal" streams, gambling app promotions. See online gambling and teens.
  • Links in descriptions and comments to other platforms

How to steer the feed

  • Not interested and Don't recommend channel, from the three-dot menu on any video
  • Clear or pause watch history to reset recommendations (Settings, History and privacy)
  • Subscribe to good channels together so recommendations have better material to work with
  • Turn off autoplay

Limit time

  • Use YouTube's Take a break and bedtime reminders.
  • Set app limits through Family Link or Screen Time.
  • Prefer longer videos with a clear end over Shorts for younger children.

Kid influencers and creators

Children often admire YouTubers. Many are positive role models; some promote products, risky stunts or unhealthy values. Ask your child about their favourite creators. See influencers and ads aimed at kids.

Watch together

Sitting with your child for 10 minutes while they show you their favourite videos tells you more than any setting.
